EWR, Inc. was formed as a private corporation in August, 1994 in Memphis, TN. The company was established to operate as an electronic warehouse receipt Provider for cotton under the U.S. Warehouse Act modifications made in 1993. EWR’s initial shareholders represented all segments and geographical areas of the U.S. raw cotton industry.

In September, 1995, the first electronic cotton receipt was issued on the EWR system. The number of electronic receipts issued grew each year during the 1990’s as paper receipts disappeared. In the late 1990’s, the first electronic certificated receipts, which are usable for futures trading, were issued on the EWR system.

In 2004, EWR focused on expanding its market when it began to offer electronic receipt services for the peanut industry. In that same year, EWR purchased another company, eCotton. The purchase increased the number of electronic receipts processed by EWR and allowed the company to begin selling software packages to gins and warehouses in the cotton industry.

The 2006-07 season brought a huge milestone for both the cotton industry and EWR. During that season, there were 22.3 million cotton receipts issued on the EWR provider system. This was the largest amount issued in a single season since EWR’s formation.

In the following years, EWR continued to grow and expand. The EWR’s disaster site for the Provider operations was established in Raleigh, NC in 2009. In 2010, EWR became a licensed Provider of electronic grain receipts. The company began to offer custom software development services to companies within and outside the agribusiness in 2012. In 2015, EWR entered the global market when the company modified the Provider system to allow international electronic receipts to be issued by warehouses outside the U.S.

EWR’s headquarters are located in Collierville, Tennessee which is a suburb of Memphis. There is another office location in Raleigh-Durham, NC. EWR is managed by a Board of Directors all of whom are involved with the company’s receipt Provider operation. The staff currently includes 16 full-time employees.
